Extended exhale breathing is the easiest place to start. Breathe in through your nose for four counts and out slowly for six, for three to five minutes. It needs no equipment, can be done anywhere, and is gentle enough for most people. Belly breathing, where you let your abdomen rise on each inhale, is another simple foundational technique.
From the base of the spine upward, the seven chakras are the root (Muladhara), sacral (Svadhishthana), solar plexus (Manipura), heart (Anahata), throat (Vishuddha), third eye (Ajna) and crown (Sahasrara). Each one is traditionally linked with a region of the body and, in modern interpretations, with a color and a life theme such as safety, creativity, confidence, love, expression, intuition and meaning.
People describe a blocked heart chakra as feeling guarded, lonely, numb or stuck in resentment, or finding it hard to receive kindness. Some feel the opposite, giving too much and losing themselves in others. These are reflective descriptions rather than diagnoses. Any chest pain or breathing difficulty needs a doctor, and ongoing sadness deserves support from a licensed therapist.
The quickest method is a brush-off combined with breath. Set an intention to release what is not yours, sweep your hands from head to feet, flicking toward the floor, then take five slow exhales while imagining heavy energy draining into the earth. It takes about two minutes and can be done almost anywhere, including at your desk or in a bathroom.
Start with boundaries: limit time with people who drain you, keep conversations shorter and avoid becoming their default sounding board. Before seeing them, ground yourself and visualise a protective bubble of light. Afterwards, cleanse by washing your hands, shaking out your body or stepping outside. Remind yourself that their mood belongs to them, not you.
