Lesson 1 of 8, about 14 minutes

What Reiki Is, Where It Comes From, and What This Course Offers

Welcome to Reiki-Inspired Self-Healing Practice. Over eight lessons you will learn a gentle, hands-on way of resting attention in your body, calming your breath and offering yourself care. Before we begin, it matters to be clear about what Reiki is in its own tradition, and what this course is and is not.

Reiki is a Japanese practice developed in the early twentieth century by Mikao Usui. The word is usually translated as "universal life energy" or "spiritually guided life energy." Practitioners describe placing their hands lightly on or just above the body to support the flow of this energy, encouraging relaxation and a sense of balance. Over the decades Reiki spread from Japan to Hawaii, the United States and around the world, and many different lineages and styles now exist.

Attunement and the role of a teacher

In traditional Reiki, the ability to practice is passed on through an attunement (sometimes called an initiation or reiju) given in person, or in some lineages at a distance, by a Reiki teacher, often called a Reiki Master. Students usually progress through levels, learning hand positions, symbols and principles from that teacher. Most lineages consider this teacher-to-student connection essential.

This course does not offer a Reiki attunement and is not a Reiki certification. It will not qualify you to call yourself a Reiki practitioner or to treat other people. Instead, it is a Reiki-inspired self-care practice: it borrows the spirit of Reiki — calm presence, gentle touch, the traditional principles and a simple sequence of hand positions — and teaches you to use them for yourself. If this practice resonates and you feel drawn to the full tradition, you can seek out a qualified Reiki teacher in a lineage that feels right to you.

What self-practice can and cannot do

Many people find that a quiet session of hands-on self-care helps them slow down, notice tension and feel more at ease. That is the honest promise of this course. Reiki and Reiki-inspired practice do not cure or treat illness, and nothing here should delay you from seeing a doctor. Energy practices can sit alongside — never replace — care from a doctor or licensed therapist. Some hospitals and clinics offer Reiki as a complementary comfort measure, and that is exactly the right frame: complementary, not instead.

You do not need any particular beliefs to benefit. Some people experience the practice as a spiritual connection to universal energy; others see it simply as mindful touch, rest and breath. Both are welcome here. If you would like more background first, the library article on what Reiki is covers the history in more depth, and what energy healing is places it in a wider context.

How the course is structured

We start with preparation and the traditional principles, then build sensitivity in the hands, then learn a full self-practice sequence in two parts. Later lessons apply the practice to emotions, stress and sleep, and the final lesson helps you build a sustainable routine.

Practice

Today's practice is a simple "first contact" session of about ten minutes. Its only aim is to notice what it feels like to rest your hands on yourself with kind attention.

  1. Find a quiet place to sit or lie down. Silence your phone and loosen any tight clothing.
  2. Take five slow breaths, letting your shoulders drop a little more on each exhale.
  3. Rub your palms together for a few seconds, then let them rest apart, palms facing each other, and notice any warmth or tingling.
  4. Place both hands gently over the center of your chest. Let them be heavy and relaxed, not pressing.
  5. Stay for three minutes, simply noticing: warmth, coolness, the rise and fall of breath, emotions, thoughts. Nothing needs to happen.
  6. Move both hands to rest on your belly and stay for another three minutes.
  7. Let your hands return to your lap. Sit for a moment, then write down three words describing how you feel now compared with when you began.

Reflection prompts

  • What drew me to Reiki or hands-on self-care at this point in my life?
  • How comfortable am I receiving care, including my own?
  • What did I notice in my body during the first-contact session?
  • What would I like this practice to bring into my daily life, in realistic terms?

In the next lesson we prepare the ground: creating a calm space, setting an intention, and working with the five Reiki principles that sit at the heart of the tradition.
